Petty Officer 1st Class (SEAL) died after his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device while conducting a combat patrol in Zabul province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare unit, Norfolk, Va.
The PO1 had been in Afgahanistan since Mar.
The 6th San Antonio class ship, PCU San Diego (LPD 22) successfully completed builder's trials for Huntington Ingalls Industries in the Gulf of Mexico.
San Diego is to be commissioned in 2012, and will be based at its namesake city in California.
The ship broke ballast tanks in the trials.
USS Germantown (LSD 42) departed Okinawa, Japan to commence a patrol of the Western Pacific region after embarking elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). Germantown will conduct amphibious integration training (AIT) exercises as part of Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG)/31st MEU during the patrol.
Essex ARG/31st MEU consists of USS Essex (LHD 2), Germantown and USS Denver (LPD 9).
USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) arrived in Vladivostok, Russia on a three-day visit, meant to boost ties between the two countries' navies. Meanwhile, a Russian Pacific Fleet task force led by RFS Varyag (011) is heading towards Guam to take part in a joint drill with US naval ships.

USS Spruance became the newest member of the U.S. Navy's Pacific fleet at NAS Key West on schedule.
USS Ford (FFG 54) arrived in Kochi (former Cochin), India for a port visit after concluding a Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) Bangladesh 2011.

USS Ohio (SSGN 726) arrived in Subic Bay, Philippines Oct. 01 for a visit as part of its deployment to the Western Pacific.
Ohio is homeported at Naval Base Kitsap in Bangor, Wash. but remains forward deployed out of Apra Harbor, Guam, for most of its 16-month operational cycle. Ohio is manned by two separate crews (Blue and Gold) who alternate every four months.
USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) is moored alongside The Royal Netherlands navy frigate HNLMS De Ruyter (F804) in Faslane, Scotland. Arleigh Burke is deployed to participate in Exercise Joint Warrior 2011-2. Joint Warrior serves as a certifying event for ships deploying with coalition forces in future operations.
F-35B Lightning II made the first vertical landing on a flight deck at sea aboard USS Wasp (LHD 1). The F-35B is the Marine Corps Joint Strike Force variant of the Joint Strike Fighter and is designed for short takeoff and vertical landing on Navy amphibious ships.

U.S. Department of Defense, Spanish Government reached the agreement of stationing four U.S. Aegis BMD ships at Rota, Spain to build a missile defense system in Europe.

USS Ford (FFG 54) departed in Kochi (former Cochin), India after a four-day port visit. During the visit the crew of Ford had a full schedule of sporting events, receptions, community service (COMSERV) events and interaction with the local community and Indian Navy.
Since the departure from its homeport of Everett Wash. in May, Ford has visited Hawaii, Guam, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, and India. Ford has also taken part in a Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) exercise in the 7th Fleet area of responsibility, further strengthening international partnerships through a range of joint naval operations.
One of Independence class littoral combat ships will bear the name of the city of Jackson, Miss. The future USS Jackson (LCS 6) will be built at Austal’s shipyard in Mobile, Ala. Austal is scheduled to build as many as 10 littoral combat ships.

The Department of the Navy's next Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) will be United States Naval Ship (USNS) Choctaw County. This will be the first naval vessel to serve as the county’s namesake, an honor shared by Choctaw counties also located in Alabama and Oklahoma.
The USNS Choctaw County will be constructed by Austal USA in Mobile, Ala.
For the first time since 2007, U.S. P-3C Orion maritime patrol squadron will be deployed to Misawa Air Base, Japan. The squadron from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Wash., will arrive in Misawa in late Nov.
The move to bring a squadron back coincides with the drawdown of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and was in an effort to bring surveillance coverage in the region back to 2007 levels.
There is no timetable for how long the aircraft will be in Misawa.
Curently, USS Truxtun (DDG 103) Truxtun is deployed to Arabian Sea in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility conducting maritime security operations and support missions as part of Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn.

USNS Rappahannock (T-AO 204) conducted a dual replenishment at sea with USS Mustin (DDG 89) and USS Kidd (DDG 100) to stock up on fuel and supplies of both destroyers.
Kidd and Mustin are currently traveling with USS George Washington (CVN 73) that departed her forward-operating port of Yokosuka, Japan, Sept. 19 to continue her 2011 patrol.
USS Oak Hill (LSD 51) is currently participating in Southern Partnership Station (SPS) 2012, an annual deployment of U.S. military training teams to the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility in the Caribbean and Latin American.

The 6th San Antonio class ship, future USS San Diego (LPD 22) was damaged late last month when an improperly-installed relief valve caused part of the ship’s ballast system to overpressurize, damaging three ballast tanks. However the shipbuilder, Huntington Ingalls called the trials “successful.”
Following repairs, the system and their tanks will be retested during acceptance trials, expected to be run in Nov.
San Diego is apparently to be commissioned in 2012 on schedule.
JS Kashima (TV 3508), JS Asagiri (TV 3516) and JS Mineyuki (DD 124) as part of JMSDF Training Squadron arrived at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hi. for a scheduled port visit.
The Training Squadron has deployed to an annual five-month training sailing since May 24.

Emory S. Land's Repair Department will conduct equipment adjustments and manufacture items to enhance the quality of living for Columbia's crew during their Western Pacific deployment.

Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) announced JS Kurama (DDH 144) will participate in KOA KAI exercise to increase tactical capabilities in the vicinity of Hawaii using U.S. facilities. Kurama is expected to deploy from Oct. 19 to Dec. 05.
Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) announced the 5th Soryu class submarine, future JS Zuiryu (SS 505) will be named and launched at the ceremony in Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Kobe shipyard, Hyogo Pref. on Oct. 20. Zuiryu is expected to join the fleet Mar. 2013.

Lincoln CSG is preparing for a change-of-homeport deployment to Norfolk, Va. later this year.
USS Ponce (LPD 15) is conducting amphibious training operations off the North Carolina coast with U.S. Marines. Ponce is on the first leg of its final round of training operations and ports of call prior to being decommissioned in 2012.
Currently, USS Pinckney (DDG 91) is operating in South China Sea, the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR). Pinckney is deployed as part of John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group. Addition to Pinckney, USS Dewey (DDG 105) is apprently underway near the waters.

The George Washington Carrier Strike Group (CSG), centered around USS George Washington (CVN 73) and embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5, arrived in Singapore for a port visit on her fall patrol.
George Washington has patrolled more than 4,800 nautical miles of the western Pacific Ocean since departing Yokosuka, Japan Sep. 19.
GW was joined in Singapore by USS Cowpens (CG 63), USS Dewey (DDG 105) and USS Wayne E. Meyer (DDG 108). The two destroyers are primary assigned to John. C Stennis CSG.

CERTEX took place from Oct. 01-12 and was the final phase in a complex training series used to evaluate and prepare ARGs before deploying overseas.
Makin Island ARG that consists of USS Makin Island (LHD 8), which serves as the command ship for Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 5 and the 11th MEU, as well as USS New Orleans (LPD 18) and USS Pear Harbor (LSD 52) is to deploy later this year.

The commanding officer of a Bahrain-based logistics task force, Capt. David Geisler was fired for for a loss of confidence in his ability to command.
He is the 19th commanding officer of U.S. Navy fired in 2011.

USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) pulled into her homeport of Everett, Wash., for the last time after a three-week composite training unit exercise off the coast of California with CVW 2, DESRON 9 and USS Cape St. George (CG 71).
Lincoln will depart Everett in Dec. for a change-of-homeport deployment that will take the ship to its new homeport in Norfolk, Va. Lincoln is relocating to conduct a scheduled four-year refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) in-port maintenance period, which will refurbish the ship for another 25 years of service.

The commanding officer of USS Kentucky (SSBN 737), Cmdr. Joseph Nosse was fired due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command. He is the 20th CO of U.S. Navy to be fired this year, the second highest toll for the service going back to 2000.

The Annual Exercise or ANNUALEX 2011 (海上自衛隊演習), the biggest maritime exercise of MSDF is scheduled for Oct. 27-Nov. 04 in southwest Japan waters. Almost 30 MSDF ships and 60 aircraft will participate in the exercise. And 20 U.S. ships will also join the ANNUALEX.
The ANNUAL Exercise series continues to be the premier training exercise to increase interoperability between MSDF and U.S. Navy.
USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) conducted a replenishment at sea with USNS Yukon (T-AO 202) in eastern Pacific Ocean. Reagan is underway in the U.S. 3rd Fleet area of responsibility (AOR).

USS Wasp (LHD 1) returned to its homeport of Naval Station Norfolk, Va. after spending three weeks at sea hosting the initial sea trials of the F-35B Lightning II, Joint Strike Fighter (JSF).
While the underway, the first F-35B landing on ship marked Oct. 03 and two F-35B U.S. Marine Corps test jets (BF-2 and BF-4) logged more than 28 hours of flight time and completed 72 short take-offs and 72 vertical landings.
The next sea trial is scheduled for 2013 after Wasp receives additional modifications for F-35B operations.

Currently, USS George Washington (CVN 73) is participating in Annual Exercise (ANNUALEX) 2011, a bilateral field-training exercise sponsored by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) in southwest Japan waters.
ANNUALEX allows the U.S. and Japan to practice and evaluate the coordination procedures and interoperability elements required to effectively and mutually respond to the defense of Japan, a regional crisis, or a contingency situation in the Asia-Pacific region.

Currently, JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Umigiri (DD 158) have deployed as 9th DSPE in the Gulf of Aden. They achieved 9 escort missions for 51 ships (5 Japan related ships and 46 non-related ships) for this month.
Oct. 11, JS Takanami (DD 110), JS Oonami (DD 111) departed from MSDF Yokosuka Naval Base as 10th DSPE.
Djibouti based 7th DAPE and 8th DAPE achieved 18 sorties and 140 flight hours in the Gulf of Aden for this month.
Oct. 06, 8th DAPE that consists of two P-3C aircraft; assigned to Fleet Air Wing or FAW 1 left MSDF Kanoya Air Base for JSDF Djibouti facility to replace 7th DAPE.
