USS Russell departed Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam

USS Russell (DDG 59) departed Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hi. for a seven-month independent deployment to the Western Pacific and U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations including ballistic-missile defense, support of CSG, ARG and surface strike groups.

Future USS Spruance left Bath, Maine for Key West, Fla.

The newest and the 61st Arleigh Burke class destroyer, the future USS Spruance (DDG 111), sailed away from the Bath Iron Works shipyard in Bath, Me. on its maiden voyage to her commissioning site in Key West, Fla. before heading to her eventual homeport of San Diego, Calif.

In addition, the future USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) is currently under construction at Bath Iron Works and will deliver in fiscal year 2012. DDG 111 and DDG 112 are the last two ships in the Navy's initial production run of this class. DDG 113, to be built by Huntington Ingalls Industry in Pascagoula, Miss., will be the first of the DDG 51 program continuation ships.

Japan MoD to extend XP-1 development program by one year

Japan Ministry of Defense (MoD) officially extended XP-1 development program by one year.

XP-1, the JMSDF next generation maritime patrol aircraft, recently faced several crack troubles on strength tests of airframe in ground. The cause is under investigation and improvements will be carried out.

USS Green Bay arrived in Darwin, Australia

USS Green Bay (LPD 20) and embarked 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) as part of Boxer ARG/13th MEU arrived in Darwin, Australia for a port visit during their 2011 maiden deployment. Currently, Boxer ARG/13th MEU which consists of USS Boxer (LHD 4), Green Bay, USS Comstock (LSD 45) and 13th MEU is on its way homeport of San Diego, Calif.

Note

Aug, 31, Boxer and Comstock visited in Hong Kong, China. Green Bay seems to be independently operating since departing Phuket, Thailand.

U.S. Navy Casualty

The Navy civilian was pronounced dead in Kabul, Afghanistan, while on temporary assignment with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He worked for Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic, Norfolk, Va.

The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation.

USS Carr completed visit to Murmansk, Russia

USS Carr (FFG 52) departed Murmansk, Russia after completing its third port visit to Russia since late Jun.

During their visit, Carr Sailors participated in a community service project and hosted a reception on board for local government officials and special guests. Among those guests were veterans of the Polar Convoys. During World War II, the men who ran these convoys supplied much-needed aid from the Allies to the Soviet Union in their fight against Germany.

Carr is homeported in Norfolk, Va., and is on a three-month deployment supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.

MSDF to import six used C-130s from United States

Japan Ministry of Defense or MoD decided to import six used C-130 transport aircraft from United States to replace three superannuated MSDF YS-11 transport aircraft. Taking lessons of Tohoku earthquake and Chinese threat into account, MSDF plans to increase their transport capability.

MoD will appropriate almost 12 billion yen to buy C-130s in draft of third supplementary budget for FY 2011.

U.S. Navy Casualty

A Commander who was supporting Operation New Dawn died as a result of a non-combat related incident in Manama, Bahrain. He was assigned to U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, supporting operations at the Combined Maritime Forces Coalition Coordination Center at Naval Support Activity, Bahrain.

An investigation is in progress.

Reconnaissance of earthquake in Hokkaido

At 22:29 P.M. (JST), an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred off the south coast of Hokkaido. The earthquake posed no tsunami risk. An MSDF P-3C assigned to Fleet Air Wing or FAW 2, two GSDF UH-1 choppers and an ASDF U-125A aircraft took off each Air Base for reconnaissance within 60 minutes.

Sep. 08 at 01:25 A.M., all flights concluded and confirmed no damage.

The training is called mass casualty drill by U.S. Navy

Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) announced that MSDF Yokosuka District and U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Yokosuka will take part in an annual 18th medical special training at MSDF Yokosuka Naval Base and U.S. Fleet Activities Yokosuka on Sep. 08.

This training is designed to improve hospitalization capability for victims and cooperation procedure with U.S. Navy on big earthquake.

U.S. Navy Casualty

Petty Officer who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom died while conducting a dismounted patrol in Marjah, Helmand province, Afghanistan.

The PO was assigned as a hospital corpsman to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 5, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Boxer ARG arrived Guam

USS Boxer (LHD 4), USS Comstock (LSD 45) and embarked 13th MEU made the third port visit in Guam for Boxer ARG/13th MEU in the U.S. 7th Fleet AOR since departing the 5th Fleet AOR on Aug. 16 during their WestPac deployment.

Aug. 31, USS Boxer, USS Comstock and 13th MEU visited Hong Kong for the second port visit.

Russian warships went into La Perouse Strait

Joint Staff Japan reported that an MSDF P-3C aircraft, assigned to 2nd Fleet Air Wing, sighted four Russian warships in 250km west-southwest of La Perouse Strait around 01:00 A.M. (JST).

The ships, three Grisha V class corvettes MPK-64 (323), MPK-17 (362), MPK-222 (390) and an Altay mod class light tanker passed through the strait, known as Soya strait in Japan, toward east around 16:00 P.M.

The ships are sailing under the Russian training airspace to which they set up close to northeast of Japan's airspace recently.

Following Russian warships passed through La Perouse Strait

Joint Staff Japan reported that an MSDF P-3C aircraft, assigned to 2nd Fleet Air Wing, sighted 20 Russian warships in 200km west of La Perouse Strait from 01:00 to 10:00 A.M. (JST) yesteday. It seems that almost all ships will pass through the strait today.

Sep. 09, the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation announced 50 Russian warships, 10,000 personnel and aircraft will conduct a large naval exercise including anti submarine warfare, amphibious warfare drills near Kamchatka Peninsula. And they recently set up three live firing training areas around Kuril Islands, off the east coast Kamchatka Peninsula.

It's conceivable not only the 20 ships, but also 4 ships passed through the strait yesterday will participate in the naval exercise.

USS Mount Whitney arrived Rijeka, Croatia for an overhaul

USS Mount Whitney (LCC 20) pulled into Viktor Lenac shipyard in Rijeka, Croatia for a two-month overhaul. The shipyard has received a 6.5 million Euro (almost 8.9 million U.S. dollars) contract to overhaul and provide maintenance services to Mount Whitney.

USS Newport News returned

USS Newport News (SSN 750) returned to homeport at Naval Station Norfolk, Va. after a scheduled deployment. Newport News conducted maritime security operations in the European Command area of responsibility. The boat made port visits to Toulon, France; Faslane, Scotland; Haakonsvern, Norway; Portsmouth, England; and Lisbon, Portugal.

JS Teruzuki was launched

Future JS Teruzuki (DD 116), 2nd Akizuki class destroyer, was named and launched at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Nagasaki shipyard. Teruzuki will be joined the fleet on Mar. 2013.

Boxer ARG/13th MEU returning to homeport

USS Boxer (LHD 4), USS Comstock (LSD 45) as part of Boxer Amphibious Ready Group/13th MEU conducted an underway replenishment with USNS John Ericsson (T-AO 194) in Pacific Ocean. Both ships visited Guam on Sep. 09.

Currently, Boxer ARG which consists of USS Boxer, USS Green Bay (LPD 20), USS Comstock and 13th MEU is on its way homeport of San Diego, Calif during its regularly scheduled deployment.

USS Makin Island returned to San Diego after COMPTUEX

USS Makin Island (LHD 8) returned to San Diego, Calif. after completing a 16-day Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX) with USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) and .USNS Yukon (T-AO 202) off the coast of Southern California.

The successful completion of COMPTUEX means that the ARG is ready to begin the Certification Exercise (CERTEX), the final test before deployment.

USS Arleigh Burke, USNS Kanawha to participate in Joint Warrior 11-2

Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 26, embarked aboard USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), departed Naval Weapons Station Yorktown, Va. to participate in the multinational exercise Joint Warrior 11-2 off the coast of Scotland.

Joint Warrior is a United Kingdom-led, multi-warfare exercise designed to improve interoperability between allied navies and prepare participating crews to conduct combined operations during deployment.

In addition to Arleigh Burke, USNS Kanawha (T-AO 196) will work alongside navies from the United Kingdom and other NATO allied partners; Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Turkey.

USS Russel visited Cebu, Philippines

In line with the "America in 3D (Diplomacy, Development and Defense)" program of the United States Embassy, USS Russell (DDG 59) dropped anchor in Cebu, Philippines.

Russell is currently on an independent deployment from her homeport of Pearl Harbor, Hi. and on patrol in the Western Pacific Ocean.

Russian SSBN went through La Perouse Strait

Joint Staff Japan reported that an MSDF P-3C aircraft, assigned to 2nd Fleet Air Wing, sighted Russian one Delta III SSBN, one Sorum class salvage tug in 350km east-northeast of La Perouse Strait around 05:00 A.M. (JST).

Both ships were heading to southwest, then passed through the strait.

U.S. Navy christened JHSV Spearhead

U.S. Navy christened the Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) Spearhead at the Austal Shipyard in Mobile, Ala.

The 338 foot-long aluminum catamaran is being constructed by Austal USA in Mobile, Ala. Spearhead and the nine other JHSVs under contract allow intra-theater transportation of troops, military vehicles, supplies and equipment.

EODGRU 1 returned to NAS North Island from Iraq

Sailors assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group (EODGRU) 1 returned to Naval Air Station North Island, Calif., completing an eight-month mission as Joint Task Force (JTF) Troy in Baghdad.

During the deployment EODGRU 1 was responsible for exercising command and control of operational EOD forces throughout Iraq as the first Navy EOD brigade to assume command of this JTF.

MHI suffered cyber-attack

Today, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Ltd. which is the biggest defense contractor in Japan revealed they have suffered hacking and computer virus attack.

As result of attacks, about 80 virus-infected computers and servers were found at the company's Tokyo headquarters as well as factories, shipyrards and research & development centers related nuclear energy and defense. Incidentally, MHI grasped marks of wrong downloading in their servers.

This news is the first damage report of cyber-attack against Japanese defense contractor, as far as I know.

USS George Washington departed Yokosuka, Japan

USS George Washington (CVN 73) returned to sea to continue her 2011 patrol after three weeks at her forward operating base of Fleet Activities Yokosuka, Japan.

In the months ahead, George Washington will participate in the Annual Exercise (ANNUALEX) alongside the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF); an exercise that is held every year between the two nations. ANNUALEX involves multiple scenarios that include anti-submarine, air-to-surface and air-to-air warfare training.

Returning to sea aboard George Washington is Carrier Air Wing 5 which consists of VFA 27, VFA 115, VFA 195 (F/A-18E); VFA 102 (F/A-18F); VAQ 136 (EA-6B); VAW 115 (E-2C 2000NP); VRC 30 Det. 5 (C-2A) and HS 14 (SH-60F/HH-60H).

USS Donald Cook deployd

USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) departed Naval Station Norfolk, Va. to begin a scheduled deployment to the U.S. 5th and 6th Fleet areas of responsibility.

Donald Cook will help promote peace and security while working to deter crimes on the waters of the Arabian and Mediterranean Seas.

USS Carr returned from three-month deployment in U.S. 6th Fleet

USS Carr (FFG 52) concluded a three-month deployment in the U.S. 6th Fleet, Sept. 19, returning to her homeport of Norfolk, Va. During the deployment, Carr visited several countries, including Norway, Poland, Russia and Scotland.

Lincoln departed for COMPTUEX

USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) departed San Diego, Calif. for a three-week composite training unit exercise (COMPTUEX) along with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 2, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 9 and USS Cape St. George (CG 71) off the coast of California.

"COMPTUEX will mark the first and only time during the strike group's current Fleet Response Training Plan cycle that all elements of the strike group will operate together," said Commander, Carrier Strike Group 9, Rear Adm. Mike Shoemaker.

COMPTUEX is the final phase of training for Lincoln prior to the ship's scheduled change of homeport deployment later this year and refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) in-port maintenance period in Newport News, Va.

Boxer ARG arrived Pearl Harbor

All ships, USS Boxer (LHD 4), USS Green Bay (LPD 20) and USS Comstock (LSD 45) of Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and embarked 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit or Boxer ARG/13th MEU arrived at Pearl Harbor, Hi. for a port visit during their 2011 Western Pacific deployment.

Pearl Harbor is the final port visit for the ARG as the ships are scheduled to return to their homeport of San Diego, Calif. after completing a seven-month deployment.

Essex ARG/31st MEU to begin fall patrol

Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) that consists of USS Essex (LHD 2), USS Denver (LPD 9) and USS Germantown (LSD 42) departed Sasebo, Japan to begin a patrol of the Western Pacific region.

During the patrol, Essex ARG will embark and work with elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) to complete an amphibious integration training and certification exercise off the coast of Okinawa.

Essex ARG returned in Apr. from Operation Tomodachi. More recently, the ARG returned in Aug. from participation in Exercise Talisman Sabre.

USS Pasadena to undergo extended overhaul in Portsmouth

USS Pasadena (SSN 752) arrived Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Me. after its more than 7,000 miles travel from Pearl Harbor, Hi. to begin an extended maintenance overhaul.

During her overhaul, Pasadena will receive extensive modernization and the installation of the latest fire control, sonar and navigation equipment.

Reconnaissance of earthquake in Northern Ibaraki

At 22:30 P.M. (JST), an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred in North of Ibaraki Prefecture. The earthquake posed no tsunami risk. An MSDF P-3C aircraft, assigned to Fleet Air Wing 4; a GSDF UH-1 chopper; an ASDF U-125A aircraft took off each Air Base for reconnaissance within 60 minutes.

Sep. 22 at 01:27 A.M., all flights concluded and confirmed no damage.

Japan-Russia annual SAREX in Wakasa Bay

Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) scheduled to conduct bilateral Search and Rescue Exercise (SAREX) with Russian Navy in Wakasa Bay and Maizuru port on Sep. 27 and 29.

Participants from MSDF will be JS Akebono (DD 108), JS Chikuma (DE 233) and JS Nagashima (MSC 680). Russian participants will be Slava class cruiser RFS Varyag (011), Dubna class fleet oiler RFS Irkut and Sorum class salvage tug MB-61.

It seems Varyag is among Russian warships on the naval exercise near Kamchatka Peninsula.

8th DAPE to deploy in Djibouti

Joint Staff Japan, JSDF announced two P-3C aircraft; assigned to Fleet Air Wing or FAW 1 will leave MSDF Kanoya Air Base on Oct. 05 for JSDF Djibouti facility to replace 7th Deployment Airforce for Counter Piracy Enforcement or DAPE as 8th DAPE. And the unit from GSDF 1st Airborne Brigade will assume base security.

Currently, FAW 2 is deployed in the facility as 7th DAPE for the anti piracy surveillance in the Gulf of Aden.

Norfolk shipyard CO relieved of command

The commander of Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) Rear Adm. (sel.) Greg Thomas was relieved of his duties permanently for violating Article 133 of Uniform Code of Military Justice, "displaying conduct that is unbecoming of an officer and a gentlemen," according to a press release.

Russian warships arrived in Maizuru, Kyoto Pref.

RFS Varyag (011), Dubna class fleet oiler RFS Irkut and Sorum class salvage tug MB-61 arrived in Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture. It seems Varyag participated in the naval exercise near Kamchatka Peninsula.

Essex ARG/31st MEU to embark 31st MEU in Okinawa

USS Essex (LHD 2), USS Denver (LPD 9) and USS Germantown (LSD 42) of the Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) embarked more than 2,000 Marines of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) at White Beach Naval Facility, Okinawa, Japan for the ARG's amphibious integration training (AIT), and certification exercise (CERTEX).

USS Sampson seizured drugs at sea

While USS Sampson (DDG 102) was operating west of San Clemente Island and participating in a Composite Training Unit exercise (COMPUTEX) with the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group afternoon, the destroyer intercepted a small suspecious boat and seizured illegal drugs in cooperation with a P-3C aircraft from the Navy; a cutter and a helicopter from USCG.

Sampson, which in integrated into Lincoln’s COMPTUEX training, is preparing for a scheduled independent deployment.

USS Essex embarked 31st MEU's ACE off the coast of Okinawa

USS Essex (LHD 2) as flagship of Essex Amphibious Ready Group/31st MEU got underway to embark aircraft with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU)'s Aviation Combat Element (ACE). The fly-on of the remaining aircraft from Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron (HMM) 265 marked the final stage of the onload of the 31st MEU by Essex.

Essex, together with USS Denver (LPD 9), USS Germantown (LSD 42) and the MEU of the ARG, will work with to conduct an amphibious certification exercise (CERTEX) off the coast of Okinawa, Japan.

Note

The day before, Essex ARG onloaded more than 2,000 Marines of 31st MEU in Okinawa.

Base security training in Yokosuka

Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force announced Area Guard Group of Yokosuka District, MSDF and Security Department of Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka will conduct the annual base security training in U.S. Fleet Activities Yokosuka and Yokosuka port Oct. 05-07.

Final F-2 delivery ceremony

Mitsubishi Heavy Industry (MHI) Ltd. held the F-2 fighter final delivery ceremony at Nagoya Aerospace Systems Works Komaki Minami Plant. MHI has delivered ninety four F-2A/B fighters in total. And the last F-2 is F-2A (serial No.13-8564).

The day before, Air Staff Office or ASO accepted F-X Request for Proposals (RFP) of F-35 (Lockheed Martin), F/A-18E/F (Boeing) and Eurofighter Typhoon (BAE systems). Any fighter production will have been stopped in Japan until ASO makes a selection of F-X by the end of this year.

USS Russell arrived in Gan, Maldives

USS Russell (DDG 59) arrived in Gan, Maldives for a port visit.

The visit to Gan is an opportunity for Russell Sailors to engage with Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), Maldivian Coast Guard and to interact with the local community.

Russell is currently on an independent deployment from her homeport of Pearl Harbor, Hi. and on patrol in the Western Pacific Ocean.

Russian warships returned to La Perouse Strait

Joint Staff Japan reported that an MSDF P-3C aircraft, assigned to 2nd Fleet Air Wing, sighted 12 Russian warships in 350km east-northeast of La Perouse Strait around 06:30 A.M. (JST). The ships were heading to southwest, then passed through the strait.

All ships have been sighted from Sep. 09 through 10 in the vicinity of the strait by MSDF. It seems Russian Navy ended the naval exercise near Kamchatka Peninsula.

USS Nimitz returned to sea

USS Nimitz (CVN 68) moved from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility (PSNS & IMF)'s Dry Dock 6 at Bremerton, Wash. to Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton's Pier Delta, after completing required out-of-the-water maintenance while in dry dock.

While at Pier Delta, Nimitz will finish final phase of the ship's Docking Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA) and prepare to become operational and go underway again.

USS George Washington Visited Busan, Republic of Korea

USS George Washington (CVN 73), USS Cowpens (CG 63) arrived in Busan, Republic of Korea (ROK) for a port visit.

While in Busan, GW Sailors will participate in the “Armed Forces Day” celebration by hosting an open house, where visitors will be allowed to explore the ship’s hangar bay and flight deck and get an up close view of the aircraft.

Sep. 19, GW departed Yokosuka, Japan for her 2011 patrol.

Makin Island ARG/11th MEU to begin CERTEX

The Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), along with the embarked 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), departed San Diego, Calif. to begin a MEU certification exercise (CERTEX) in preparation for an upcoming deployment.

Led by Commander, Amphibious Squadron (PHIBRON) 5, the Makin Island ARG consists of USS Makin Island (LHD 8), USS New Orleans (LPD 18), USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) and 11th MEU.

The Makin Island ARG is scheduled for a routine deployment later this year.

Reconnaissance of earthquake off the coast of Fukushima

At 19:05 P.M. (JST), an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 occurred off the coast of Fukushima. The earthquake posed no tsunami risk. An MSDF P-3C assigned to Fleet Air Wing or FAW 4; GSDF three UH-1J and one OH-6 choppers; ASDF two F-4EJ MoD fighters, a UH-60J rescue chopper took off each Air Base for reconnaissance within 90 minutes.

At 21:44 P.M., all flights concluded and confirmed no damage.

JS Takanami, JS Oonami to deploy for anti piracy operation

Joint Staff Japan, Japan Self-Defense Force announced JS Takanami (DD 110), JS Oonami (DD 111) will depart from MSDF Yokosuka Naval Base for an anti piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden Oct. 11.

Currently, JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Umigiri (DD 158) are deployed as 9th Deployment Surface Force Counter Piracy Enforcement (DSPE).

U.S. 2nd Fleet disestablished

The U.S. Navy's Second Fleet (C2F) in Norfolk, Va. merged with U.S. Fleet Forces Command in Nofolk to cut costs today after 65 years of service.

BOXARG returned to San Diego, Calif after seven-month deployment

Boxer Amphibious Ready Group (BOXARG) returned to its homeport of San Diego, Calif. after a seven-month deployment to the Western Pacific and U.S. Central Command area of responsibility (AOR).

BOXARG consists of USS Boxer (LHD 4), USS Green Bay (LPD 20), USS Comstock (LSD 45) and 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU). Other vital elements are FST 3; TACRON 11; HSC 23, Det. 5; ACU 1, Det. C; ACU 5, Det. C and BMU 1, Det. E. BOXARG is commanded by commander, Amphibious Squadron 1, Capt. Curtis Shaub.

USS Cleveland decommissioned

USS Cleveland (LPD 7) was decommissioned at Naval Base San Diego, Calif. after the ship's 44 years of service. Cleveland will transit to Hawaii, where the ship will be in an inactive reserve status.

USS Cheyenne returned from WestPac deployment

USS Cheyenne (SSN 773) returned to Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hi. from a scheduled six-month deployment to the Western Pacific region. Cheyenne departed Pearl Harbor Apr. 01 on the deployment.

JMSDF antipiracy operation monthly report

Deployment Surface Force Counter Piracy Enforcement or DSPE

Currently, JS Samidare (DD 106), JS Umigiri (DD 158) have deployed as 9th DSPE in the Gulf of Aden. They achieved 8 escort missions for 71 ships (15 Japan related ships and 56 non-related ships) for this month.

Deployment Airforce for Counter Piracy Enforcement or DAPE

7th DAPE which consists of two P-3Cs detached from Fleet Air Wing 2, GSDF units is deployed in the Djibouti air facility for maritime patrol in the Gulf of Aden. 7th DAPE flew 18 sorties and 130 flight hours for this month.
